We Like to Read: The Paper Dolls

The Paper Dolls
by Julia Donaldson

I have a friend, Sarah, who reads stories to children at the bookshop she works in. She has recommended (and bought) lots of fantastic books for Ebony over the last two years. Whenever she mentions a new book she enjoys reading aloud, I quickly add it to my wishlist.

Sarah recommended The Paper Dolls a while ago, but I hadn’t got round to buying it yet. My wishlist is seriously huge, there are books on there I won’t have time to buy before I die. By chance, my friend Vikki bought Ebony a copy for her second birthday.

This book has been read daily since Ebony’s birthday in January, and often more than once. Ebony loves it. The first time I read it, I cried. To add a bit of context, Ebony had just turned two, and I find each birthing brings with it yet more feelings of time passing too fast, so I was feeling a little emotional.
We are big fans of Julia Donaldson’s book, and I love reading them alone because of the rhymes and natural rhythms in her stories. The Paper Dolls is different though, it isn’t written in the same style. Some bits rhyme and some bits don’t. The narration is the imagination of a little girl, and I feel it is written in that breathless way that excited children speak.

The story is about a little girl who makes some paper dolls with her mother. The story follows the adventure of those dolls as they make their way around the house and gardens. It is such a lovely book, I love reading it, even though I have read it hundreds of times already.

Ebony knows the words by heart and, as with many of her favourites, joins in while I’m reading it. But yesterday, she was playing with some bricks, and telling herself the story from memory and I was surprised at just how much of the story she knew.

The book is illustrated by Rebecca Cobb and I really like the style of the drawings. The illustrative style is just perfect for the story and makes the book even more special. It is a truly beautiful book, and I strongly recommend it.

You can buy a copy here, or just add it to your wishlist and hope one day it appears by magic.
